Another shark ranking
highly on the "most dangerous list" is the Bull Shark,
Carcharhinus leucas. In Africa it is known as the Zambezi Shark, and
in central America the Lake Nicaragua Shark. It has a typical
shark-shaped body, though it can grow quite large and is stockier
than many of the other requiem sharks (family Carcharhinidae). Its
snout is broad and short, eyes are small, and its triangular dorsal
fin usually ends in a pointed tip.
Some experts feel the bull is perhaps the
most dangerous of all sharks. This in large part is due to the fact
it thrives in freshwater systems (rivers and lakes) far inland from
the sea- areas in which people might not be expecting to find
sharks. It has been recorded more than 1700 miles up the Mississippi
River, and over 2500 miles up the Amazon. Bull sharks have killed
women washing clothes in rivers, cattle falling overboard, and
spearfishermen. This shark's ability to tolerate freshwater for long
periods of time places it in close proximity to humans.
It is a confirmed "opportunivore",
preying on bony and cartilaginous fishes (especially sharks and
rays), marine and terrestrial mammals, even invertebrates
(crustaceans, squid, and urchins). Whether you are in the Americas,
Africa, Asia, or Australia, exercise caution when skinny-dipping in
shallow murky waters or playing fetch with Fido.
